THE sixth edition of the Nedbank-sponsored three-day cycling event Tour de Great Dyke kicked off with a record number of athletes in Selous yesterday morning.

About 62 cyclists from three major mines as well as cycling clubs were on the starting grid for the event that spans over 320km.

But a record 110 cyclists are expected to cross the finish in Zvishavane tomorrow.

The tour is divided into three laps, namely the Zimplats lap from Selous to Kwekwe, the Unki lap from Kwekwe to Shurugwi and the Mimosa lap from Shurugwi  to Zvishavane.

It is the first time that Nedbank are part of the event as title sponsors.

Speaking at the tour launch at Zimplats’ Truck Inn yesterday, Nedbank head of complaints Viola Pamela Ndlovu expressed the organisation's delight to be part of the novel event.

"On behalf of the Nedbank board, management and staff it is my singular honour to stand before you today as we kickoff this year’s edition of Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke," she said.

"We are delighted to be part of this event in partnership with YaFM. The staging of this event reflects a growing cycling movement in Zimbabwe. We did not hesitate to partner with YaFM for this noble cause which has brought together over 110 cyclists from major mines and cycling clubs in Zimbabwe.

"Furthermore, we are particularly pleased to be contributing to the Gifted Child Foundation which seeks to empower vulnerable and talented children in the Great Dyke and to date as Nedbank Zimbabwe have seen about 100 children at various levels of their learning being educated," Ndlovu added.

Mainly a charity event, the Nedbank Tour de Great Dyke will not be competitive this time around with all cyclists moving in a group until the finish line.
