Crocs kill 3 in Lake Kariba

The three have been identified as Shameton Sibanda (35) of Lanlolly village and Bayton Chikomo (29) of Kaponda village, both from Magunje, as well as George Mawandiwa (38) of Mahombekombe in Kariba.

THREE people were killed by crocodiles while fishing at Chinhandowa, Gatche Gatche fishing camp in Lake Kariba last weekend.

The three have been identified as Shameton Sibanda (35) of Lanlolly village and Bayton Chikomo (29) of Kaponda village, both from Magunje, as well as George Mawandiwa (38) of Mahombekombe in Kariba.

In a statement yesterday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said in the first incident on Saturday, Sibanda was dragged into the water by a crocodile while fishing using a dinghy inside Lake Kariba.

“Subsequently, a search party comprising George Mawandiwa and other fishermen was instituted. During the search, a crocodile emerged and dragged George Mawandiwa into the water,” he said. “The search team later managed to retrieve the body of George Mawandiwa.”

The next day, the search team retrieved Sibanda’s body. The victims’ bodies were taken to Kariba District Hospital for post-mortem.

In the other incident on Sunday, Chikomo was attacked by a crocodile while casting nets using a dinghy boat on the lake.

His remains were retrieved from the annals of a crocodile after it was shot dead by the search party.

The body parts were taken to Kariba District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.

In an unrelated matter, police in Concession have arrested brothers Greymore (18) and Admire Mberenga (26) in connection with a case of murder which occurred at Hermiston Farm compound on Sunday.

The two allegedly stabbed Owen Lionde (26) with a knife on the leg, back and head for unknown reasons.

Lionde died on admission to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.

Meanwhile, police in Harare have arrested Tendai Hove (39) in connection with case of murder after he stabbed his friend, Godwin Mututa (39) with an okapi knife several times on the arm and back after an argument over US$2 in Highfield.

Mututa’s victim died upon admission to hospital.

In Dema, police have arrested Tatenda Mhonda (31) for illegal possession of a Browning pistol.

Mhonda was one of the four suspected robbers who were on the prowl in Mungate village, Seke, while armed with iron bars.

Police in Bulawayo are appealing for information which may assist in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident which occurred at the 15km peg along Bulawayo-Nkayi Road in the wee hours of Monday morning.

An unidentified man, approximately aged 25, died on the spot after being hit by a car and the motorist did not stop after the accident.

The body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for a post-mortem.
