Germany, new popular destination for Zim musicians

Collaborating with German producers and musicians exposes Zimbabwean artistes to different production techniques, opening doors for professional growth.

OVER the past year, Germany has emerged as a popular destination for Zimbabwean musicians seeking to expand their opportunities and make an impact in the global music scene. In a short space of time we have seen popular artists such as Nutty O, Exq, Dj Tamuka, Freeman, Enzo Ishall performing in various German cities and in the next two months there are three more shows lined up with Zimbabwean artistes headlining. However, the visiting artistes are missing on some big opportunities which I will explore in this article.

Having lived in Germany for almost seven years and working in the cultural space, I believe the country is a culturally diverse nation that opens up many possibilities for Zimbabwean musicians to explore. The country’s music scene offers plenty of opportunities for cross-genre collaborations, leading to an entirely new sound. Sadly the most recent visits have been mainly confined to Zimbabwean nationalities living in Germany and the artists have not done enough to tap into the German market and media space.

Music has always been a great way to promote cultural exchange and build bridges between people from different backgrounds. Zimbabwean musicians could use these tours as a tool to create an intercultural dialogue that enhances mutual understanding and appreciation between Zimbabwean, German and global audiences.

Zimbabwean musicians could be collaborating with their German counterparts which then helps them to gain access to a new audience in the global music industry.

Germany has a growing population of Zimbabweans owing to its educational opportunities, the au-pair programme and other work related opportunities. While challenges exist, intercultural dialogue and collaboration between Zimbabwean and German artistes provide excellent opportunities for growth and development in the global music industry.
