Man (59) nabbed for raping toddler

The alleged rape incident took place on January 24 this morning.

POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested a 59-year-old man from Banda homestead in Hope Fountain for allegedly raping a one-year-old baby.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said police arrested Pathisani Thebe, adding that he would appear in court soon. The alleged rape incident took place on January 24 this morning.

“A one-year-old baby girl was left in custody of her sister (14) while their mother went to town. When their mother came back she found the baby crying and tried to change her diaper, only to find out that she had been abused and her private parts were swollen,” Ncube said.

He said further enquiries were made with the 14-year-old sister revealing that Thebe had visited the family in the mother’s absence.

Ncube said allegations were that Thebe visited the place and took the baby from her sister and disappeared for 30 minutes before bringing her back.

The matter was reported at the Hillside Police Station leading to Thebe’s arrest.

Ncube urged members of the public not to leave to their children under the care of strangers.

“We urge members of the public never to trust any stranger or helper as far as their children are concerned. Thebe was a common figure in the family as he used to work for them but took advantage of the absence of the victim’s mother,” Ncube said.
