BY AGATHA CHUMA COMICAL skits continue to take the entertainment industry by storm following the rise of social media that has seen a number of male and female content creators emerging.

Among those who have become a darling for many on different digital platforms is rising comedienne Beatrice “Bee weZhira” Mudzingwa.

In her skits, Bee weZhira, despite being a holder of Bachelor of Education degree from the Great Zimbabwe University, she presents herself as Senzeni, a grown-up who is still in Grade Four.

Bee weZhira told NewsDay Life & Style that she ventured into comedy in 2020 after losing her job as a receptionist and reservationist at local leisure resort during the COVID-19-induced lockdown.

“To make ends meet, I tried comedy and surprisingly, it was fruitful. I am earning a living through endorsements from both fans and brands who like my skits,” she said.

“I act dumb in my skits, but I am actually a qualified teacher who holds a degree in education.”

Bee weZhira, who is inspired by fellow comediennes Mai Titi and Madam Boss, said she lived in two different worlds.

“Beatrice Mudzingwa and Bee weZhira are opposite characters. Once I put on Bee weZhira’s clothes, I am a different person from Beatrice Mudzingwa who is a cool, reserved, smart, loyal, open and business-minded person,” she said.

“Senzeni is old, but still in Grade Four and she is not even serious with her life.”

Her skits highlight how Zimbabwean comedy has matured over the years.

“Comedy skits exist for entertainment purposes, and I enjoy performing them while providing people with content to watch and laugh while they are relaxing or in a bad mood. I give credit to our predecessors who charted the way for us. Despite lack of exposure and marketing, comedy remains a jewel waiting to be discovered,” she added.
