BULAWAYO ward 2 councillor Adrian Redani Moyo says lack of funds has hampered the upgrading of Barbourfields Stadium.

In an interview on Wednesday, Moyo said Bulawayo City Council had a lot of developmental projects that were being implemented but it had limited resources.

“For the upgrade of Barbourfields Stadium, the local authority during the budget proposal for 2025 has set aside funds specific for the upgrade of the stadium so that it can be used for international games,” he said.

Moyo said upgrading the stadium was taking long and hoped that it will be completed by mid next year.

“The delayed upgrade of the stadium has made residents and nearby businesses lose revenue as it has made us fail to host international games, which come with a lot of opportunities for the community at large,” the city father said.

He said even local Premiership teams were hosting international matches in foreign countries.

“As the ward councillor in the recent committee council meetings, I have proposed that the local authority engages private stakeholders in order to complete the upgrade and the decision has not been adopted by the local authority,” Moyo said.

He said this month, they would see what developments have been done at the stadium and chart the way forward.

“If the stadium is completely upgraded, the football fraternity as well the citizens will benefit a lot and we will realise some investment opportunities.”
