A 40-YEAR-OLD man from Nkulumane 5 in Bulawayo has been jailed 10 years for stealing copper cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company a subsidiary of Zesa Holdings.

Mugove Makanya appeared at the Western Commonage Magistrates Court charged with contravening the Electricity Act. The prosecution proved that last week on Wednesday, police received a tip-off that Makanya was in possession of copper cables which he wanted to sell.

A team was deployed to Nketa for investigations, where Makanya arrived in a taxi and offloaded three sacks that contained copper bars and cores of burnt underground armoured copper cables.

The court heard that a police officer approached Makanya and conducted a search of his luggage, leading to his arrest.

Copper bars and cables weighing 55,5kg valued at US$1 110 were recovered.
