Stranded teenage mom kills baby

Baby poisoning

A 19-YEAR-OLD Mberengwa mother  allegedly killed her seven-month-old daughter with pesticide-laced milk after she got stranded in Zvishavane where she had gone to seek a job as a maid.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred last week.

“Circumstances are that Felistus Mpofu left home in Shumba village under Chief Mposi in Mberengwa in the company of her daughter intending to go to Zvishavane to seek employment as a maid,” Mahoko said.

“She arrived in Zvishavane at around 8pm and became stranded at Mandava bus terminus. She allegedly fed her baby with fresh milk mixed with an organophosphate tablet."

Mahoko said at around 3am, Mpofu sought accommodation at a house in Mandava where the baby started vomiting and her condition deteriorated fast.

The lady, who offered the teen mom accommodation then accompanied her and the baby to Zvishavane District Hospital where the toddler was pronounced dead.

“A report was made at ZRP Zvishavane and investigations began,” he said.

“When Mpofu was searched, a baby feeding bottle containing a smelly residue was found. This led to her arrest and subsequent detention at ZRP Zvishavane.”
